There’s never been a better reason to turn on the air conditioner than this month’s lineup on Max, which includes two great house renovation series, a crazy Tiger King-esque documentary set in the world of Renaissance faires, original films, stand-up comedy and the second season of House of the Dragon. Read on for the 10 best things you need to watch on Max in June.

Coming June 2

Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse

How do Chip and Joanna Gaines celebrate their 10-year anniversary of bringing farmhouse chic and good vibes to homes on their flagship series? They take on a severely outdated 1960s lakehouse (talk about an AARP-style challenge!) in Fixer Upper’s new season. Two episodes debut on June 2, followed by two episodes weekly through June 16.

Ren Faire

Tiger King meets Game of Thrones meets Succession meets The Golden Bachelor in this cockeyed, three-part HBO Original documentary series about 86-year-old George Coulam seeking a successor for his Texas Renaissance Festival kingdom. Get to know the colorful Coulam (known as “King George” by his staff) and the trio of longtime employees jockeying for position to take over when the founder and majority shareholder of the largest such “faire” in the world looks to cash out and spend his final years in pursuit of a romantic partner.

Coming June 6

Am I OK? (2022)

Premiering at Sundance in 2022 and now on Max, this fresh dramedy features The Lost Daughter’s Dakota Johnson (daughter of Melanie Griffith, 66, and Don Johnson, 74) stepping into her sexuality and coming out as a lesbian in her early 30s. Comedians Tig Notaro, 53, and Stephanie Allynne direct.

Coming June 7

Fantasmas, Season 1

Young multi-hyphenate and Saturday Night Live writing alum Julio Torres (Problemista), follows up his excellent 2019 HBO series Los Espookys with this six-part HBO Original comedy series that chronicles his search for a gold oyster earring through a Day-Glo, surrealist New York City. Half the fun comes from the stacked guest appearance roster, including Steve Buscemi, 66, co-executive producer Emma Stone, Paul Dano and SNL scene-stealers Aidy Bryant and Bowen Yang.

Hannah Einbinder

HBO

Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go

Part of the magic of Hacks, the sharp-as-a-stiletto comedy/drama featuring the fabulous Jean Smart, 72, is the chemistry with her Emmy-nominated young costar, Hannah Einbinder. The joke within a joke is that it’s Einbinder who’s the comic in real life — she was the youngest comedian to perform a stand-up set on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in her 2010 national TV debut. Her gently absurdist humor takes center stage in her first comedy special, a Max Original. You know Deborah will be watching!

Talk about breaking the glass ceiling. Professional rock and sport climber Sasha DiGiulian, who began climbing at age 6, climbed right through it to claim a series of bold, first female ascents of high-risk, massive rock walls. This HBO Original sports documentary charts her rise, during which the obstacles include rampant sexism. A great one to watch with the grandkids.

Playwright Jeremy O. Harris’ 2018 Slave Play captivated Broadway audiences and critics alike with its Tony-nominated tackling of race, sex and interracial relationships in a way never before seen on stage. Go behind the curtain to watch Harris workshop the play with new actors and mine even more meaning in this HBO Original documentary, which Harris also directed. It’s a look into the creative process from one of our most inventive creators.

You don’t get more New Jersey than Steven Van Zandt, 73. After famously sharing the stage with Bruce Springsteen for 50 years and the screen with Tony Soprano, this outsize rocker, actor, producer, activist and radio show host gets the spotlight all to himself — deservedly so — in this HBO Original documentary. The state of New Jersey, from real-life Asbury Park to The Sopranos’ Bada Bing! club, costars.

Breaking New Ground

It was not in Broadway actor and entrepreneur Robert Hartwell’s life plan to buy a big historic house in the Berkshires and renovate it. But in 2020 during the pandemic, while grieving the loss of a beloved aunt to COVID-19, Hartwell discovered the home online. “I said, ‘This is my house,’ ” Hartwell shared on Instagram. “The house was built in 1820 for the Russell family who owned the cotton mill in town. Slavery was still legal. I know this house is bigger than me. I wish I could’ve told my ancestors when they were breaking their backs in 1820 to build this house that 200 years later a free gay black man was going to own it and fill it with love and find a way to say their name.” Breaking New Ground, co-executive-produced by Property Brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott, follows Hartwell’s journey in six unscripted episodes.
