Universal Village: Livable Communities in the 21st Century

June 15, 2005
Washington, D.C., USA

Conference Remarks and Presentations now available.

Through the AARP Global Aging Program, AARP facilitates understanding and dialogue around the global aging agenda by convening and participating in international social and economic policy debates worldwide. AARP has identified promoting livable communities - with a range of transportation options and appropriate, affordable, and accessible housing that can enable older persons to age in place while remaining independent and engaged in community life - as a high organizational priority. Through this conference, we encourage dialogue on this issue and share best policy practices and innovations taking place in nations across the globe.

The conference featured three panels:

I. Livable Communities - Affecting Change through Government Action
II. Best Practices - Livable Communities Around the World
III. Designing the Livable Communities of the 21st Century

Panelists included specialists from Europe, Japan and the United States who shared their expertise and experiences creating livable communities, primarily in the areas of housing and mobility.
