White Collar, Blue Collar, Gray Hair: The Changing Composition Of Georgia's Workforce

Between 2005 and 2025, Georgia’s age 65+ population will be increasing considerably while its under-age-24 segment will be shrinking. At the same time, the state’s economy will be expanding with projections of significant job growth in the coming years. The combined effect of these two trends will result in fewer people entering the job market even as the demand for workers is increasing.

If they are to maintain their competitive edge, employers will need to reach out to mature workers. Doing so may necessitate employers embracing a new vision of how work is done. This compilation of employment projections, specific occupational profiles, and job trend indicators provides a guide to the shifting landscape of work in Georgia, including information about:

  • age 55+ workers most at risk of displacement over the next several years and occupations with similar skills sets possibly offering transitional opportunities
  • occupations that may experience a skill and talent drain as result of workers approaching/reaching traditional retirement age
  • age, wages/salary and educational attainment mix for various occupations
  • wages/salary and educational attainment of workers who will be 55+ in 2014 compared to those of workers currently in the Georgia labor force who will less than 55+ in 2014
