When someone dies, how does the Social Security Administration know?

En español | The Social Security Administration receives reports of beneficiary deaths from family members, funeral homes and other government agencies. Family members should inform the SSA within a month of a death. To contact the SSA you can call 1-800-772-1213, go online to SSA.gov or visit your local office.
