How soon do I become eligible for a spouse benefit under my new spouse's Social Security work record?

En español | In order to receive a spouse benefit, you generally must have been married at least one year.  However, this requirement is met if in the month before the month of marriage, you had been entitled or potentially entitled to benefits as a spouse or divorced spouse, surviving spouse or surviving divorced spouse, parent, or disabled adult child.
