In response to record levels of unemployment among older workers, AARP is stepping up efforts to assist those 50+ working across the country struggling during this time.
Free webinars, job training and employment assistance, on-line assessment tools and opportunities to engage and help others by virtual volunteering are among the new and innovative resources AARP offers older Iowans.
AARP’s 2010 “Webinar Series for Job Seekers” is designed to offer practical tools and resources tailored to the unique demands of today’s job market. Registration opens on May 1 for the June 17 session, “Refresh Your Resume for Today’s Job Market,” led by Susan Ireland, author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Perfect Resume.” Sign up for the session and learn more about the series.
The Iowa AARP Foundation-operated Senior Community Service Employment Programs (SCSEP) and the AARP Foundation/WorkSearch programs in Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Dubuque help older workers through today’s tough times by providing skills training, support for classes and training, as well as job placements. Find contacts for the SCSEP or WorkSearch office in your area.
While you look for a job, or if you have a job and you’d like to help others find their next stage, consider applying to become an AARP Foundation/WorkSearch Volunteer. Both in-office and virtual volunteering opportunities are available in Iowa. Learn more.
A number of agencies and organizations across the state also offer excellent resources and networking opportunities to help Iowans find a job. Statewide assistance is available through Iowa Workforce Development.
In Central Iowa, the Greater Des Moines Partnership offers helpful tools.
