50+ Job Seekers Learn Skills at AARP Webinars

If you’ve been looking for a job recently, you know it’s tough out there.

AARP research and surveys have shown that the current economic downturn has been particularly difficult for 50+ job seekers who are unemployed longer and at a higher rate than the rest of the population.

So what you can do to beat the odds and land that next job?

You’ve got to be willing to change your approach to land a job in the 21st century, and AARP can help.

Since 2009, AARP has offered members information and resources through quarterly webinars designed to help with a variety of job seeking tasks.

Experts from a variety of organizations have been tapped to provide information on such diverse issues as finding federal jobs, navigating your way through job loss, the art of networking in 2010, and enjoying retirement on less money. Many of these webinars are recorded and available for your listening and viewing pleasure on AARP’s website.

Resume building webinar scheduled for June 17, 11am-noon

AARP’s second quarter job seeker webinar will be hosted on June 17 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Pacific Time). The hour-long presentation will feature Susan Ireland, author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Resume; and a resume expert on She will be joined by Beth Brown, senior resume writer for to discuss how to Refresh Your Resume for Today’s Job Market.

If your resume is not getting the attention you want, it may be time to take a new look. This webinar shows you how to update and sharpen your resume so that it stands out in a crowd, which is hard to do in today’s job market. You’ll learn how to choose the right resume for the job, focus on your accomplishments rather than your job duties and assignments, and deal with age, dates and employment gaps.

What exactly is a Webinar and how do I participate?

A webinar is a live, online seminar in which a presenter reviews PowerPoint presentations over a secure web-based platform. AARP uses Microsoft’s LiveMeeting software combined with audio through a toll free telephone number. Up to 1500 participants can be online, participating from the convenience of their home computers. Although limited due to time constraints, participants can also ask questions during the presentation and can download materials provided during the webinar through the LiveMeeting site.

Once you register for the webinar, AARP will send instructions for downloading or accessing LiveMeeting; so that you can be prepared in advance to participate on the day of the webinar.
