The Employment Situation, March 2014: Some News for the Better

This AARP Public Policy Institute fact sheet looks at the March 2014 employment situation for the workforce aged 55 and older. Nonfarm payroll employment rose by an estimated 192,000 in March, and February’s growth in employment was revised upward to 197,000.

The total unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.7 percent, while that for the aged 55-plus workforce inched up to 4.7 percent from 4.6 percent. It was still below what it was a year earlier (5.5 percent). At 47.7 weeks, the average duration of unemployment for older jobseekers was somewhat higher than in February (45.6 weeks) and only slightly lower than in March of 2013 (49.2 weeks),
