This AARP Public Policy Institute fact sheet highlights the employment situation for older persons as of March 2012. At 6.2 percent, the March unemployment rate for persons aged 55 and older was above February’s 5.9. Average duration of unemployment among older jobseekers rose in March, as did the percentage of long-term unemployed..
Nearly 2 million older people were out of work and looking for a job in March. The number with jobs showed little change, while the employment-to-population ratio for persons aged 55 and over dipped slightly.
