A record 68 percent of American households now own a pet. Most, by far, are dogs and cats, who are traveling more often with their human companions. That's why an increasing number of hotels and resorts don't just accept pets, they downright cater to them — usually for a fee that goes toward deep-cleaning a room. Here are six pet-friendly lodgings around the United States that offer very special experiences.

1. Loews Coronado Bay Resort, Coronado, California

At this historic, 439-room property on a private 15-acre peninsula near San Diego, dogs and cats receive their own tags and bowls upon check-in. The royal treatment continues with specialized bedding, leashes, collars, litter boxes, pooper scoopers, gourmet pet room service, pet place mats, rawhide bones, catnip and scratch poles. Pet-walking and pet-sitting services can be arranged. Want to see Spot surf? Sign up your canine buddy for a surf lesson or for the annual Loews Surf Dog Competition. Pet fee: $25 per day.

2. Ritz Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, Avon, Colorado

Dogs can take twice-daily mountain hikes at this canine-friendly, 180-room property in Vail Valley, or participate in "Furry Paw Fridays" canine activities. And if your pooch is sore after the exercise, there's always a post-workout, in-room doggie massage option. After a room-service dinner of all-natural pet foods that might include a dessert of liver "kisses," Fido will have sweet dreams on an overstuffed bed. Pet fee: $125 for the first three nights, $25 per night after that, with $25 of fees donated to ASPCA.

3. Mandarin Oriental, Miami, Florida

Water and food bowls, a special pet menu, a plush bed and turn-down service with a treat are only part of the canine-focused luxury at this Asian-inspired, 326-room property. Among the other amenities are once-a-day complimentary dog walking and two Doggie Boot Camp options with a certified dog trainer — one a Play Date and the other a Training Date if Fido needs a bit more focus. During down time, dogs can relax in canine-sized bathrobes or, better yet, in shirts studded with Swarovksi crystals for a bit of Miami bling. Pet fee: $200 deposit, with $100 refunded on checkout.

4. Muse Hotel, New York, New York

At this 200-room Manhattan property of the Kimpton group — one of the pet-friendliest hotel chains — animals of all kinds are welcome to stay with their humans. Cats and dogs are furnished with amenities that include pet bowls and beds, dog leashes for strutting Big Apple sidewalks, organic treats and squeak toys. Pet sitting, grooming, walking, massage and acupuncture services can be arranged by the concierge. And the hotel even has a Director of Pet Relations: Ginger, a Teacup Pomeranian, who "loves Louis Vuitton, spa days and ahi tuna." Pet fee: none.

5. Topnotch Resort, Stowe, Vermont

Humans are encouraged to bring their dogs, but not cats, to special pet-friendly units at this 68-room, 23-home luxury property where outdoorsy activities prevail. A hike with your dog in the Green Mountains? Staff will recommend specific routes — easy to moderately difficult — as well as spots where Fido can happily paddle around river swimming holes. For a post-hike treat, a Rover Reiki session at the Spa at Topnotch might be in order before Fido sleeps like a lamb on a fleece-wrapped AeroBed. Pet fee: none.

6. W Chicago-City Center, Chicago, Illinois

The P.A.W. (Pets Are Welcome) program at this 402-room outpost of the very pet-friendly W chain exhorts humans "to bring Fido along for some pampering too" and to order "tuna tartare on ice for Fluffy." Amenities for four-legged guests include pet toys, a pet bed and a turndown treat. Staff can arrange for grooming and pet-sitting services, or for a Windy City stroll with a professional walker. Pet fee: $25 per night, plus nonrefundable $100 cleaning fee.
