Are survivor benefits reduced for a Postal Service employee's survivor?

En español | Generally, your Social Security benefits as a widow or widower will not be reduced if you are receiving a government pension that is not based on your earnings. Thus, if a widow is getting a pension based on her late husband's earnings, her survivor benefit should not be affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision.

However, if she receives a pension based on her own earnings from a government job where she did not pay into Social Security, then her survivor benefit will be affected by Government Pension Offset. That rule reduces Social Security benefits by two-thirds of the amount of the government pension received.
