North Carolina Retirement Savings Program: Opinions of Small Business Owners

This AARP survey explored the opinions of North Carolina small business owners or decision makers about employee benefits. Most small business owners expressed concern as taxpayers that some North Carolina residents have not saved enough money for retirement. Most think that more should be done to encourage them to save for retirement. More than half expressed concern about their employees not having enough money to cover health care or living expenses when they retire. 

About three in five small business owners in North Carolina say they do not offer a retirement savings plan. More than three in five say they do not offer one because it's too costly, while more than a third say they are concerned about how complicated they are to manage. Three in four North Carolina small business owners support a privately managed, plug-and-play retirement savings option that would help small businesses offer their employees a way to save for retirement. Most agree that being able to offer a voluntary, portable, retirement savings option helps local small businesses attract and retain quality employees and stay competitive.

Interviews were conducted November 19–December 11, 2020. The sample, including owner names and companies, came from a Dun & Bradstreet business list and was weighted to reflect the Dun & Bradstreet universe of businesses in North Carolina with 0–100 additional employees.
