AARP personal tech writer Edward C. Baig answers: Don’t be hard on yourself. This doesn’t work like a taxi. With Uber or Lyft—the two most popular ride-hailing services in the U.S.—you’ve already paid in the app, and you’re thinking about getting where you need to be, not reopening the app to tip. But there are options for late tipping:

LYFT: You have up to three days to add a tip. Tap the menu icon in the upper-left corner and tap Ride History. Select the ride and tap Tip Driver.

UBER: You have up to 30 days to add a tip to a trip. Tap Activity at the bottom of the screen and, under Past, select the ride. Then tap Add Tip.
