IN FEBRUARY 1976 the country-rock band the Eagles released Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975), which soared to the top of the charts. Over the years, the collection has competed with Michael Jackson’s Thriller (1982) for the title of best-selling album in the U.S., with an estimated 38 million copies sold.
What is it about the Eagles’ music that thrills listeners? We talked with country singer Travis Tritt, 62, a superfan:
“The first time I ever drove a car, the first time I went on a date, the first time I ever kissed a girl, Eagles music was playing. It became the soundtrack of my life. ‘Best of My Love’—I can remember numerous times being alone with a girl and playing that.
“Then, when I was getting started in music, the Eagles’ repertoire served me well. As soon as you start playing ‘Lyin’ Eyes,’ you’re going to draw a crowd because everybody knows it. That song talks about a relationship that is not going well. People can relate to that. You can go back and listen to that album now, and it stands the test of time. It’s as strong as it ever was.” —Alanna Nash
