The Power of Connection

Why relationships matter for older Americans

A GROWING BODY of scientific research shows what many older Americans already know deep down: Our relationships are vital to our overall happiness and health.

Relationships significantly influence our mental, emotional and physical health. For older adults, a strong social network can lower the risk of cognitive decline, heart disease and even early death. And yet many face increasing isolation as they age, whether because of retirement, health issues, mobility problems or the loss of long-term companions.

But nurturing your friendships and relationships can help boost resilience, lift spirits and improve overall well-being. In other words, connection isn’t just nice to have—it’s a fundamental part of healthy aging.

That’s why we created this special issue of AARP THE MAGAZINE with a focus on relationships. You’ll discover how celebrities stay close with their best friends, learn about the rewards of building intergenerational relationships, find practical ways to reach out and renew bonds, read stories of extreme kindness and finding purpose through connection, and more. We also share AARP resources for combating isolation and cultivating meaningful bonds.

The science is clear—and the stories are powerful. We hope you enjoy them.
