ROD RAVES & RAILS

Thank you for the weeklong earworm you’ve given me with your cover story on Rod Stewart [“Do Ya (Still) Think I’m Sexy?”]. I would like to share that honor with you; everyone, all together now! “If you want my body / and you think I’m sexy …”

Me and hundreds of thousands of model railroaders worldwide are amazed at Rod’s talents as a model railroader!

CANCER CHECKS

Thank you for the informative article on skin cancer [“Skin Cancer Is Trickier Than You Think”]. But you failed to mention an aggressive type of skin cancer that is the second most common cause of skin cancer death after melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). It is becoming more prevalent, especially among men over age 50. Jimmy Buffett passed away recently after battling MCC for four years.

As one of the earliest breakthrough survivors of stage 4 melanoma (immunotherapy came along just in time), I appreciated the article about self-checking for precancerous skin lesions. But one important piece of advice was omitted: Use the buddy system. You can’t see your own scalp under your hair or the bottoms of your feet, two particularly dangerous locations for melanoma. Over the years my wife has spotted several suspicious spots I couldn’t have seen on my own.

GREAT DAME

After reading through Angelina Jolie’s accolades [“Big 5-Oh”], I noticed that one of her biggest achievements/awards was omitted from the list. In October 2014, she received an honorary damehood from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for “services to UK foreign policy and the campaign to end war zone sexual violence.”

SMILE EXPERTISE

Editor’s note: In our feature “Hold On to Your Smile” (June/July), we inadvertently left out the name and title of one of our experts. She is Sonya Dunbar, a dental hygienist and public speaker specializing in geriatric tooth care in Jacksonville, Florida.
