This November, those choices carry particular significance. The members of Congress elected will help determine the future of issues that affect millions of older Americans every day, especially Social Security and family caregiving.

Choosing a candidate who will protect Social Security is one of those decisions. For more than 90 years, the program has been the bedrock of retirement security in America. Today, about 70 million people rely on the benefits earned over a lifetime of work. The members of Congress elected this November will face critical decisions on whether to preserve those benefits. That’s why it’s so important to understand candidates’ positions on protecting the program.

Family caregiving deserves that same level of attention. More than 63 million Americans provide care for parents, spouses and friends, often while balancing careers and raising families of their own. The next Congress will have opportunities to advance policies that provide caregivers with more financial relief, workplace flexibility and support.

At the heart of AARP’s voter engagement work is a belief that democracy is strongest when people have the facts they need to make informed decisions. As Marc Lacroix, an AARP volunteer from New Hampshire, puts it, “Learn about the candidates, understand the issues and then get out and vote.”
