AARP CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

State offices honor community with virtual and in-person events

A mariachi band, folklórico performances and a community mercadito will be part of the AARP Texas office’s annual Celebrando Dallas fair. But so will fraud prevention, health resources and caregiving support. “It’s important for the Hispanic community to know that we are well aware of their culture, that we value and want to celebrate it,” says Lisa Rodriguez, AARP Texas state director. “We want to be on the ground with them.”

Each year from mid-September to mid-October, AARP participates in a nationwide celebration of Hispanic cultures—and spotlights Americans whose ancestors came from Mexico, the Caribbean or Central or South America—as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Hispanic Heritage Month for us is an opportunity to celebrate the richness and diversity of Hispanic and Latino cultures while creating a space here at AARP for intergenerational experiences,” says Adriana Mendoza, an associate director of advocacy and community engagement at AARP California.

Throughout the month, AARP will focus its efforts at the national level on financial security. In a 2026 survey of adults 50 and older, 1 in 5 respondents said that growing up, they did not learn about money topics such as budgeting, saving or investing. Hispanic and Latino adults in particular were the least likely to have learned these skills. “Helping break barriers in an area where AARP has the information and the resources, both in English and Spanish, is part of our social mission,” says Jennifer Lubrani, a communications strategy director at AARP.

At the local level, festivities will be led by AARP state offices, which will organize virtual and in-person events such as talks on savings and financial planning, exercise and wellness classes, musical performances and more.

Over 300 events took place across the country in September and October 2025. This year, scheduled gatherings include a 5K race organized with House of Neighborly Service in San Antonio, a Día de los Muertos celebration in late October in Los Angeles and the New York Latino Film Festival. State offices will also hold virtual events and workshops on a host of topics, from Latin dance classes to a series of cooking demonstrations with culinary historian Maite Gomez-Rejón.
