The rise in vacant commercial buildings presents numerous challenges for urban areas. Economic impacts include the direct reduction in property tax revenues and stifling of economic development, which in turn impacts city services and programs. Social impacts typically include an increase in criminal activity and public health and safety hazards. To confront these challenges, cities of all sizes around the world are exploring converting these buildings into other uses, including much needed #AffordableHousing. Join us on April 23rd for AARP’s Next Equity by Design webinar, Vibrant Encores: Vacant Buildings Helping to Solve the Housing Crisis, where we will be discussing how cities of all sizes around the world may be converting a variety of #VacantBuildings into other uses yet continue to fail in recognizing the needs of people as they age. Read the case study and register for this opportunity to discuss with the experts behind the work https://lnkd.in/e8sfpzw4 #buildequity #adaptivereuse #agefriendly

Choosing where to live as we age is pivotal. While many of us prefer to stay in our current homes, it's essential to assess if they meet our changing needs. AARP's Livable Communities initiative and Livability Index offer invaluable resources to navigate these questions and find communities that prioritize safety, accessibility, and connection for all ages. Check out Jo Ann Jenkins' latest column for insights on enhancing livability in your area! #AgingInPlace #LivableCommunities #CommunityBuilding
One of the most important choices people make is where they want to live, in terms of both their home and their community. We know that the vast majority of people want to stay put as they age. Yet as we grow older, many of us look around at our homes and find they’re no longer a good fit. This leads to some big and important questions: How can I make my house safer and more comfortable for the years ahead? Do I need to move? Is this the best place for me now? What could make it better? Are there cities that would be a better fit as I age? AARP is here to help. We created the AARP Livable Communities initiative to help people answer these very questions, and our Livability Index tool to help people find communities and neighborhoods that meet their needs – with safe, walkable streets; age-friendly housing and transportation options; access to needed services; and opportunities for people of all ages to connect and participate in local life. My latest column explores the key elements of livability, and how local governments, organizations and neighbors can work together to bring positive changes and greater livability to every community. #OlderAdults #CommunityBuilding #LivableCommunities #AgingInPlace

Starting this month, AARP and The DAISY Foundation are teaming up to help consumers thank and show gratitude to nurses, while also helping nurses working in all settings feel valued and appreciated during an especially challenging time for health care workers. This collaboration taps both organizations’ unique resources for a common purpose and invites AARP members and their family caregivers to recognize a nurse in the community with a DAISY Award nomination. #HealthCare #Nurses #Nursing #RNs #LPNs https://lnkd.in/efrnHYvq

Drew Roskos, Associate Principal at Perkins Eastman, and Sheryl McMullen, Investment & Marketing at Downtown Strategy at City of Calgary, will speak at our next Equity by Design webinar, Vibrant Encores: Vacant Buildings Helping to Solve the Housing Crisis, about how adaptive reuse conversations are proliferating in cities around the world, yet rarely incorporate population aging and the changing needs of people as they age.
