A Journey to Remember

In 1960 three high school classmates said, "Let's go downtown and take a seat"

Joyce Cusack was among the crowds in Washington to witness the inauguration of Barack Obama, the first African American president. It was a long journey to such a momentous event from the days of segregation she lived through in her hometown of DeLand, Fla.

On the eve of the inauguration, the former Florida state representative and other members of the class of 1960 at DeLand’s Euclid High School, who were inspired by the marches led by Martin Luther King Jr., reminisce about the lunch counter sit-ins they organized as students.
