AARP SD Welcomes New Executive Council Members

AARP relies on volunteers to get work done.  And truthfully, without volunteers we would not get much done at all.  AARP South Dakota is lucky to have volunteers who teach driver safety classes, fill out tax forms, lobby at the state capitol, work on projects in their community, gather Divided We Fail pledges and stories, communicate with the media, represent AARP on committees, and the list goes on.  Recently, AARP South Dakota added two new members to  the Executive Council, a group of volunteers who serve as the leadership team for AARP South Dakota, helping shape and enrich the experience of aging for each member in South Dakota and society as a whole.  
First, I am thrilled Kevin Kavanaugh of Sioux Falls has joined the Executive Council.  Kevin is Vice President of Marketing for the Sioux Falls Federal Credit Union and recently completed an eight year term on the Sioux Falls City Council.   Kevin has a strong interest in public policy issues at all levels of government, and has a particular interest in workforce issues. 
I am also thrilled that Gail Ferris of Pierre has joined the Executive Council.  Gail recently retired after spending 18 years as the Director of Adult Services and Aging for the State of South Dakota.  In 2006, Gail won the AARP South Dakota Don Vogt Award for Advocacy.    Gail is a perfect example of someone who wants to stay active in retirement, especially regarding the issues she has worked on for so many years.  Gail knows she has things to contribute toward policy development and implementation that can help make SD a great place to grow older.     
Gail and Kevin join current Executive Council members Pat Gross of Vermillion–State President; Shirley Eisnach, Pierre–SDRTA (South Dakota Retired Teachers Association) Liaison; Molly Salcone, Spearfish; and me.  I look forward to working with our new Executive Council, and will share information about our efforts in future columns.
