All five candidates for Maine Governor (Eliot Cutler, Paul LePage, Elizabeth Mitchell, Shawn Moody, and Kevin Scott) attended a candidate forum sponsored by AARP Maine at the Muskie Center in Waterville Sept. 21. The event was produced in collaboration with the Maine Area Agencies on Aging Association and Time Warner Cable. About one hundred people were invited to the event including AARP Maine State President, Carol Kontos, as well as more than 20 AARP volunteers.
Each of the candidates responded to questions on a number of aging-related issues. Notably, each candidate committed to improving access to home- and community-based services for older adults, as well as reducing the incidence elder abuse in Maine. Candidates differed, however, on how they would implement the new federal health care law in Maine.
AARP Maine staff provided those in attendance with copies of the AARP Maine Gubernatorial Candidate Voter Guide, which includes the written responses from each of the five candidates on how they plan to address aging-related issues in the state if they are elected governor. The AARP Maine Gubernatorial Candidate Voter Guide is online for those who want to know where the candidates stand.
The forum garnered significant media coverage with all major television networks in attendance, along with print media, such as the Bangor Daily News and Portland Press Herald. Many of the stories aired and published featured quotes from AARP volunteers. Time Warner Cable taped the entire candidate forum which can be viewed on Channel 9 (TWC-TV) Oct. 5 at 8pm, Oct. 6 at 2pm, and Oct. 26 at 8 pm.
