Wyoming: Battle for the Statehouse

Incumbent: Gov. Dave Freudenthal (D) is term-limited

Democrat: Democratic Party Chair Leslie Petersen

Republican: Former U.S. Attorney Matt Mead

2008 Presidential Result: Obama 33%; McCain 65%

55+ Population (2009 estimate): 24.5%

Overview: This was mostly a contest to see who would win the Republican primary because the Republican candidate is the overwhelming favorite to wrest a seat from the Democrats. John McCain won the state in the 2010 presidential race, and now Barack Obama gets even lower ratings, with only 32 percent approving of the job he is doing as president. The economy is the key issue.

50+ Facts: Check the latest economic statistics and details on the state budget deficit.

Fun Fact: Sarah Palin endorsed state auditor Rita Meyer against Matt Mead in the primary, calling Meyer one of her "mama grizzlies," but it didn't help.

'Wild card' Issue: Taylor Haynes, a retired surgeon and rancher, is running as a write-in candidate, saying he has a conservative platform of strictly following the U.S. Constitution. He is drawing support from the Tea Party followers, but probably not enough to topple the GOP nominee, even in this wild election year.
