Rhode Island: Battle for the Statehouse

Incumbent: Gov. Don Carcieri (R) is term-limited

Independent: Former GOP Sen. Lincoln Chafee

Republican: Carcieri ex-Communications Director John Robitaille

Democrat: State Treasurer Frank Caprio

2008 Presidential Result: Obama 63%; McCain 35%

55+ Population (2009 estimate): 26.2%

Overview: Rhode Island is an anomaly this election year: a state where a healthy majority of the voters support President Obama (Rasmussen poll). That said, the state could well elect an independent as governor. Chafee (son of former Rhode Island Sen. John Chafee) lost in his reelection race for Senate and became an independent. He is very popular in the state and has criticized both John Robitaille and Frank Caprio.

50+ Facts: Check the latest economic statistics and details on the state budget deficit.

Fun Fact: Chafee spent seven years as a farrier (shoeing horses) before getting into politics.

'Wild Card' Issue: Rhode Island is the recipient of a $75 million "Race to the Top" grant for education and infrastructure and Chafee mildly praised Carcieri for getting the money, but says he'll be the best one to see that it is spent wisely. The others, not surprisingly, disagree.
