Oklahoma: Battle for the Statehouse

Incumbent: Gov. Brad Henry (D) is term-limited

Democrat: Lt. Gov. Jari Askins

Republican: Rep. Mary Fallin

2008 Presidential Result: Obama 34%; McCain 66%

55+ Population (2009 estimate): 24.7%

Overview: This is a state where distancing oneself from President Obama and national Democrats might pay off for Jari Askins. You won't see the president or House Speaker Nancy Pelosi campaigning here. The tactic resulted in Askins cutting into Mary Fallin's lead, and it remains to be seen whether she can hold on to the state for the Democrats. The Republicans are hitting back with ads trying to directly tie her to Obama, and hurling the word "liberal" around as a sort of slur.

50+ Facts: Check the latest economic statistics and details on the state budget deficit.

Fun Fact: No matter who wins, Oklahoma will have its first female governor.

'Wild Card' Issue: Outgoing Gov. Brad Henry was an early supporter of Obama in the 2008 primaries. Henry's role in Askins' campaign has to be circumspect. On the one hand he is popular around the state, but on the other his ties to Obama could be unhelpful.
