Look out world, here comes Dr. Kimberly Moore. As the newly crowned 2010 Ms. Senior America, Dr. Moore has great plans for her year’s reign and she wants all seniors to join in the fun.
“We’ve been programmed from a young age to believe that retirement is about the beginning of the end of our lives,” said Dr. Moore, “Nothing could be farther from the truth. It’s the beginning of the best part of our lives.”
As people live longer, retirement from work should continue to be a goal, but for totally different reasons than our parents had. This is the time we, as retirees or seniors, get to embark on what we always wanted to do but didn’t have the time. It’s about fun, it’s about energizing ourselves and it’s about truly living life to the fullest.
Dr. Moore competed in the Ms. Senior America contest representing the Virgin Islands. She was selected for the top spot out of the 33 participating jurisdictions.
“This is the first time an area outside the contiguous US was honored with this recognition and I am extremely proud that this puts Virgin Islands seniors ‘on the map,’” said Dr. Moore.
But Dr. Moore is more proud of her plan to spend the next year leading seniors everywhere to a happier and healthier perspective on their retirement years.
“Retirement is NOT about sitting around and waiting for the end.”
Oh No. Not for Dr. Moore. It’s about getting up out of that chair and doing something new, exploring new places and hobbies and most of all – enjoying the blessings that come with physical exercise.
And she is living proof of how well seniors can do just that. As a contestant in the national contest, Dr. Moore thrilled the judges with a rousing impersonation of Tina Turner complete with all the icon’s signature dance moves.
“You have to get up and out of the chair,” states Dr. Moore, “It’s a mindset we all have to overcome. There is so much yet to do and as seniors we have earned the opportunity to pursue our dreams – and fulfill them!”
Dr. Moore began her working career as an elementary school teacher before earning a master’s degree in counseling. Still striving to achieve new goals, she again went back to school where this time she earned a degree as a dentist. Although she has an active dental practice on the island of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, Dr. Moore is planning for what she calls the best of the two halves of life.
In the meantime, she hopes to spread the word about staying young by traveling the country as Ms. Senior America, accepting invitations to provide inspirational lectures, and who knows, perhaps ”Tina” may also make an appearance and get the audience on their feet with a little song and dance. Look for announcements about Ms. Senior America coming to provide a presentation near you.
