AARP Program Offers Real Savings
Instead of paying to get their taxes prepared, people with moderate and lower incomes can save money by getting free tax preparation assistance through the AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide program. The program is offered not only to AARP members but people of all ages. Available the first week in February through April 15, it is the nation's largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service.
Volunteer Tax Preparers Trained by IRS
The program has grown tremendously since it started in 1968 with four volunteers. Today approximately 34,600 AARP Tax-Aide volunteers, trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, now help more than 2.6 million taxpayers nationwide file their federal, state and local tax returns each year. AARP volunteers make sure those who file with AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide service receive all the deductions and credits to which they’re entitled. The AARP Tax-Aide program is offered at approximately 6,500 locations nationwide in senior centers, libraries, community centers and other convenient locations.
Many Nevada Sites
In 2008, over 200 Nevada volunteers at 44 sites helped over 28,000 people with their tax returns with that number growing significantly last year. Last year the Nevada Tax Aide program saw significant increases in the number of people helped, some sites recorded. Many sites take reservations, and also provide electronic filing so that returns are paid to the taxpayer quickly.
