6 Best Things to Buy in March

Focus on seasonal deals this month in the absence of a major shopping holiday

As seasonal discount shopping goes, March isn’t the biggest month for bargains. Retailers are more focused on making the transition from winter to spring than they are on hosting huge sales or extending fat markdowns.

“There is no major commercial spending-focused holiday in March, like the winter holidays or Presidents Day, or even back-to-school shopping,” says Rebecca Gramuglia, a consumer expert at TopCashBack.com, which offers members cash back on purchases from participating retailers.

The absence of a major shopping holiday, however, doesn’t mean no good deals can be had in March. Look for freebies and discounts on pizza and pie on Pi Day (March 14), as well as some sales on green apparel for St. Patrick’s Day (March 17). Otherwise, retail experts say the best sales will reflect inventory that retailers want to clean out to make room for new stock. Here’s a peek at six products that are among the best things to shop for in March.

1. Skis and accessories

March is when you can often find the best deals of the year on skis and related equipment like goggles, boots and poles to use next year. “Not only will you save on the end-of-season sales, but they might also have last year’s stuff that they weren’t able to sell discounted even more,” says budgeting expert Andrea Woroch.

Pro tip: If you already know where you’ll be hitting the slopes in 2023, March is also a great time to get a discount on next year’s lift tickets.

Where to find deals: Local ski rental shops, REI, EVO.com

Potential savings: 30 to 40 percent off

2. Luggage

In addition to catering to spring breakers, retailers are making room this month for new collections, says Julie Ramhold, a consumer analyst with deal site DealNews. Given that many people put travel on hold last year due to COVID-19 concerns, you may find a greater selection of last year’s merchandise on sale than you might in other years.

3. Frozen foods

Since the 1980s manufacturers and retailers have recognized March as “Frozen Food” month, using it as an opportunity to promote and discount the items in the freezer aisle, says Sally Lyons Wyatt, a food and beverage analyst with IRI Worldwide. The wild card in 2022 is inflation, which could cut into the level of markdowns offered at supermarkets this year. “But if you’re looking to save at the grocery store and stock up on frozen foods, March is the month to do it,” she says.

Where to find deals: Acme Markets, Safeway, ShopRite

Potential savings: 5 to 10 percent off single items; “buy one, get one free” promotions

4. Vacuums

For lots of consumers, the warmer weather and longer days of March signal that it’s time for spring cleaning. Retailers are ready to support the urge, offering discounts on both manual vacuum cleaners and robotic models. “We see deals on vacuums and other cleaning products at the big-box stores as well as smaller, local retailers in the spring,” says Kimberly Palmer, a spokesperson with the personal finance website NerdWallet.

Where to find deals: Home Depot, Target, local stores

Potential savings: Up to 30 percent off

5. Beauty products

Several retailers have big sales on products like makeup, hair dye and skin care each March, as people adjust their beauty routines to the change in season. It’s a good time to stock up on everything from your daily moisturizer to that new lipstick color you’ve been wanting to try.

Where to find deals: Whole Foods, Ulta, CVS

Potential savings: 25 to 50 percent off

6. Golf clubs

Retailers typically start to stock up on new golf inventory in March, as the warmer weather lures many golfers back out onto the links. Supply chain disruption may have impacted deliveries and sales schedules this year, however, so shop around, says Marilyn Anderson, author of How to Live Like a Millionaire When You’re a Million Short. While discounts may be modest overall, keep an eye out for bigger price cuts on leftover clubs and gear from past seasons.

Where to find deals: Dick’s Sporting Goods, PGA Golf Superstore, The Golf Warehouse

Potential savings: 5 to 10 percent off
