As we say so long to summer, you can say hello to some fantastic September deals! I personally feel September is one of the months that offers the most savings. Not only because we start the month with Labor Day sales, but also many retailers are clearing space for holiday, winter and 2019 merchandise.
Typically, September is when Apple releases its new iPhone. This means previous generations will be drastically discounted. If your current phone is in good condition, you may be able to get a credit through Apple’s trade-in program or sell it to sites like Gazelle. Don’t forget, Apple offers educational discounts. So, if you are a teacher or student, or you qualify under the company's educational discount program, you may receive additional savings on products and Apple Care.
Clean up with savings of up to 40 percent off on washers, dryers and dishwashers. Best Buy has an appliance Labor Day sale running until Sept. 12. For example, you can find a Samsung built-in dishwasher marked down to $379.99 from $479.99, saving you $100. Or get $150 off a Maytag high-efficiency top load washing machine priced at $569.99. Sears is also having its Labor Day sale, offering up to 40 percent off. You can find a Kenmore dryer regularly priced at $1,059.99 with a $435 discount — bringing the sale price down to $624.99. Plus, Sears is offering an additional 10 percent off when you use the coupon code Appliance10.
Speaking of coupon codes, September is National Coupon Month! I am a big fan of using coupons, and I save hundreds of dollars a year using them. Growing up, my parents always cut coupons, but these days not only are coupons available online 24/7, but the range of products is also limitless. Coupons and coupon codes are among the easiest ways to save money. In celebration of National Coupon Month, look for higher value coupons and more manufacturers offering coupons. Be sure to join your grocery store and drugstore loyalty programs to save even more money.

Now is the time to book your holiday travel. You will find not only better deals, but also a much better selection on flights and seats. Waiting to purchase holiday travel is not recommended, especially if you are traveling to a destination with limited flights. If you have the option to depart or arrive at a couple of airports, be sure to compare prices. I have found as much as a 20 percent difference flying out of different local airports.
Plus, on September 22 you receive free admission to any national park in honor of National Public Lands Day. Furthermore, more than 1,300 museums will open their doors to visitors for free on the same day as part of Museum Day. For more information on national parks and other travel offers, visit the AARP Travel Center.
And while we are on the subject of travel, September is a fantastic time to buy luggage. Macy's has some of the best deals on luggage, offering closeouts at over 75 percent off. In addition to the sale prices, you may be able to order online and pick up in the store — which may qualify you for a 20 percent discount off a future purchase. When shopping for luggage, compare warranties in addition to prices. And keep in mind that some airlines charge for checked luggage over 50 pounds. So, think lightweight when making your purchase.
If you have been waiting to buy a new car, your wait is over! September is historically the best month to negotiate a deal on both a new car and a used car. Most dealerships will be clearing their showroom floors to make room for their 2019 models. In addition to offering new model incentives, 2018 and prior year models will be on sale. Consider a certified preowned car for extra assurance. These are cars that have been inspected and offer a warranty. Don’t jump on the first deal you see. September has 30 days and you can usually score the best deals closer to the end of the month. Shop weekdays, because the showrooms are busier on weekends. You want a salesperson to have the time to answer all of your questions and negotiate with you.
Almost everything you can imagine for your outdoor living space will be marked down starting with Labor Day sales. For example, Lowe's has an incredible Labor Day sale on outdoor patio furniture. Find chaise lounge chairs for 58 percent off — regularly $85, and on sale for $35. Or stackable patio chairs — regularly $12.98 on sale for $4.48. (The great thing about anything stackable is that once the weather changes you can store them until next summer.) If you use a Lowe’s credit card, you save an additional 5 percent.
One thing I do when I need to make a larger purchase like an appliance or patio furniture is to check my credit card points balance. I accumulate a lot of points from using my American Express card, and I can trade in those points for a wide range of store gift cards. So, I get the sale price and can use gift cards to help with the purchase.
