To save even more on your purchases, look for in-store coupons and manufacturer rebates.

April showers bring much more than just May flowers — they bring some exceptional deals. And this month, the deals aren’t just on individual items, but also on entire categories such as home improvement and gardening. In fact, April is all about going green, enjoying green and planting green — all while saving some green!

As the weather starts to improve, many of us gear up for spring-cleaning. Fortunately, you will find some of the best deals on everything from cleaning products to high-end vacuums to help with your efforts. When buying a new vacuum, there are certain features to keep in mind. Usually, a motorized brush will clean carpets more efficiently than a vacuum with suction. A suction feature is good for drapes and fabrics. Keep in mind that if you purchase a bagged vacuum, you will need to spend money on replacement bags. And for certain bagless models, you will need to buy filters. Check the replacement costs when considering which model to buy. To save even more on your purchase, look for in-store coupons and manufacturer rebates.

Enjoy the great outdoors! April 21 to 29 is National Park Week — which means free events and free entrance for everyone on opening day, April 21. Parks will also be celebrating Earth Day on April 22. Check for free events and activities where you live. Some counties will be offering free e-cycling for old electronics as well as free paper-shredding days.

National Arbor Day (April 27) takes place this month, too. If you become a member of the Arbor Day Foundation, you can receive 10 free trees that will grow well in the area in which you live. The foundation will send them directly to you to plant at your home, or you can have them sent as a gift to someone else. Plus, you can receive discounts to nurseries. If you plan on buying flowers and plants, look for stores that offer a long-term or even lifetime plant warranty program. For example, Orchard Supply Hardware offers a lifetime plant guarantee policy, provided you have the original receipt.

You will find some of the best deals on lawn mowers this month as well as deals on products to help your lawn grow and stay green. Ready to start planting your flowers and veggies? Now is the time to find the deals, as April is also National Garden Month.

Now that your yard is set for entertaining, you can also find some of the best deals of the year on gas grills. Save your receipts, and if the grill you purchase goes down in price within about 14 days, most larger stores will offer a price adjustment. This means they will give you back the difference between the price you paid and the new sale price.

This is also National Car Care Month, which means deals on helping to extend the life of your car. The Car Care Council website is a good place to find tips on keeping your car safe and tuned up. Find free events and car care clinics in your area, as well as a free car care guide.

We are about to enter bridal season, but you don’t have to be a bride to take advantage of the deals. April is one of the months of the year that you can find deals on everything for the kitchen, including deals on dishes and fine china. Since people will be gearing up for June weddings, items that you will typically find on a bridal registry will be on sale.

And finally, in celebration of the end of tax season (hurray!), check your local restaurants and office supply stores for Tax Day freebies. If you need help with your taxes, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax-preparation assistance. Now in its 50th year, Tax-Aide has helped 50 million low- and moderate-income taxpayers. You don't have to be an AARP member, and there's no age requirement to get tax help from IRS-certified volunteers. Check the Tax-Aide site locator for a location near you, or call 888-227-7669 toll-free.
