Cut the Cost of College Textbooks

The typical college student spends about $1,000 a year on textbooks but doesn’t always have to.

For free downloads of select books no longer under copyright—typically, classics of literature—guide your college-bound offspring to bartelby.com. Free e-books on multiple topics are also available at gutenberg.org and books.google.com. To rent books by the semester, try sites such as chegg.com, bookrenter.com and campusbookrentals.com.

Or, if your student wants to hang on to the reading forever, the places to investigate are lower-cost vendors such as www.booksprice.com, campusbooks.com and bigwords.com.
