Need a haircut, teeth cleaning or gourmet meal? Save some money by skipping the pros and hitting up the pros-in-training. Many colleges, vocational schools and training programs offer services at discount prices to provide students with hands-on experience.
Barbara Kurtz and her husband Robert, of Kirtland, Ohio, report that they have received $5 dental cleanings and exams from Lakeland Community College Dental Hygiene Program and “great meals” at discount prices from the Northeast Ohio Culinary Institute. They also take advantage of services at a nearby Aveda Institute, which offers discounts on a variety of salon, massage and other spa treatments performed by students and has training locations in 21 states.
“The students need clients in order to learn, the supervisors make sure you have a good experience and there’s no tipping,” says Barbara. “Everybody wins.”
