The senior discounts offered by some major American hotel chains are valid all over the world, so if you qualify for it here, be sure to ask for it there.
For example, the discounts available at Comfort Inn, Clarion, and other Choice Hotels International are good in 40 countries: a 15 percent discount and free continental breakfast for AARP members at age 50, a 10 percent break for others 50 and older, and 20 to 30 percent off for all guests 60-plus when reservations are made online or by phone at (800) 4-CHOICE.
Marriott Hotels, including JW Marriott, Renaissance, and Courtyard, offer a senior discount that may be 15 percent or more for guests 62 or older. Holiday Inns give you a special rate if you’re at least 62. Wyndham Hotels’ 35 to 40 percent discount for AARP cardholders is available at many of its overseas locations, too.
And several of Starwood’s brands of hotels with foreign locations—including Sheraton, Westin and Le Meridien—stand by their offers of up to half off for AARP members who make a nonrefundable reservation at least 21 days in advance with a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday arrival, or 5 to 15 percent off if you can’t plan that far in advance. It’s wise to plan ahead: Special rates are subject to room availability at participating hotels.
