Is there a hydrant near your home? That could get you a nice break.

Looking to cut the cost of your homeowner’s insurance? Ask about discounts your insurance company may offer to customers who are less likely to file a claim. For instance:

Ways to save on homeowner's insurance include discounts for being close to a fire hydrant.

• If you have a monitored home security system, you may be able to save as much as 20 percent.

• Some insurers reduce your premium if your house has dead bolts, has new wiring, or is near a fire hydrant or inside a gated community.

• Check out discounts for people who are 55 or older or who haven’t made a claim in 10 years. 

If you’re married, list the spouse with the better credit score first when applying for a policy. And try to “bundle” — use one company for multiple policies.
