Healthy Aging: Helping People to Live Long and Productive Lives and Enjoy a Good Quality of Life (2011)

The number of older adults in the U.S. is expected to reach nearly 71 million by 2030. This expanding older adult population will significantly affect the nation’s public health system and increase the demand for aging-related services. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) produced this report to discuss the implications associated with the rapidly aging society, highlight opportunities to improve older adults’ health and quality of life, and outline CDC’s role in promoting healthy aging.

Key Points

The report discusses ways to improve the quality of life of older adults such as promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors, increasing the use of preventative services, and providing education on planning for serious or terminal illness. The Healthy Aging Program at CDC is working to create a comprehensive approach to helping older adults maintain their independence as they age.

The main goals of the Healthy Aging Program include:

  1. Enhancing the ability of communities to implement effective and sustainable strategies and programs to promote healthy aging among older adults.
  2. Improving efforts to integrate public health and aging services and enhancing outreach programs for disease prevention for older adults.
  3. Promoting healthy aging by increasing the delivery of preventative services for older adults.

How to Use

Local officials and community planners can use the information presented in this report to gain an understanding of how to foster aging in place in their communities by educating older adults on the importance of healthy living and providing preventative services that are easily accessible to older adults, among other things.
