“I no longer feel safe climbing the stairs in my house. I go to bed at night by flashlight because I can’t change the burnt out light bulbs in the ceiling light. I’m afraid of falling in the shower or tripping on my front porch steps.”

Do these sound familiar to you? Or do you have a family member or neighbor who experiences this? We all do. Whether it is a concern today or a concern for you in the future, we all want to be safe and comfortable in our own homes as we age.
Overwhelmingly, by 85%, members tell AARP they want to stay in their current home for as long as they choose. Sadly, few do anything to prepare for the necessary changes that may need to be made to make the home age friendly and safe.
Beginning this fall, AARP Missouri will host a series of workshops across the state to educate consumers on what they can do to make their homes safer and more comfortable as they age. The program is called the AARP Home Fit Workshop. For the remainder of 2011, these workshops will take place in Kansas City, St. Louis, Joplin and Columbia. In 2012, we hope to reach deeper into the state with this important program.
Why develop a program like Home Fit? Home Fit was developed because people like you have told us that they want to remain in their own home as they age, with independence and dignity for as long as they can. They don’t want to have to sell their home to move to a ranch-style house, or have to build a home that is more accessible, or move to an independent living facility. And, heaven forbid, they don’t want to go to a nursing home. Home Fit addresses the things you can do to modify your home to be more accessible and safe – which is a great investment in your future and quality of life.
I encourage you to learn more about this program and to look for opportunities in your community where Home Fit can make a difference. Better yet, if you have experience with home modifications or know someone who has, this is a great opportunity to be a Home Fit presenter in your area of the state. Just reach out to us and we’ll make that happen. To learn more, be sure to read the October issue of AARP’s Bulletin. There is a full page dedicated to AARP Missouri’s Home Fit efforts.
