Focus on Family Caregivers Marks AARP Initiatives

Family Caregiving on the Rise

In 2011, AARP released our most recent report on family caregiving, Valuing the Invaluable, which showed as many of 61million Americans provided family members with caregiving services during the prior year, for an estimated economic value of $450 billion. Though AARP commissioned the report in the past, each survey showed significantly numbers of caregivers than in years’ past. Family caregiving is increasing with the graying of America.

In Nevada alone, some 260,000 family caregivers provide services which would cost in excess of 3 billion dollars at a pay rate of $10.47/hour.

The cost to the caregiver can be enormous. In addition to the financial toll resulting from out-of-pocket costs, caregiving often impacts retirement security, physical and emotional health, social networks, careers, and ability to keep their loved one at home.

Many Caregivers Don’t Know About Available Resources

Though more than 53% of family caregivers admit that they need support and help; 59% have not sought out any caregiver resources to deal with their responsibilities. Many confess they aren’t sure where to go.

The AARP Caregiver Resource Center offers an array of tips – from what you need to get started to legal issues to caring for yourself; in addition to online support groups, care locators, and other valuable tools. In addition, AARP produces a downloadable booklet, Prepare to Care, which helps new caregivers understand how to manage their new role. With checklists and sample caregiver planning tools, the brochure can help you and your loved ones through what can be a difficult time.

In Nevada, there are a number of services which can help caregivers and the people they care for; which can be found by scrolling to the end of the AARP Nevada webpage.

AARP Nevada Advocates for Caregivers Locally

In addition to supporting legislation protecting a wide array of senior services in Carson City, AARP is also involved in several local coalitions which focus on caregiving issues.

In November, AARP is a sponsor for the 7th Annual Nevada Caregiver Coalition Awards Recognition Luncheon at the Atlantis Hotel. At the luncheon, the Coalition will recognize exceptional professional and family caregivers.

If you know a caregiver who you consider exceptional, you can submit that individual for one of the awards. Nominations may be submitted until October 1, 2012. For more information please contact Laura Coger 1-877-786-4999 or
