Barbara Given, a Distinguished Professor in the College of Nursing at Michigan State, is a member of the AARP Caregiving Advisory Panel.

En español | Barbara Given is associate dean for research and director of the doctoral program as well as a Distinguished Professor in the College of Nursing at Michigan State University. She has been actively involved in research on long-term care, home care, chronic illness and family care for more than 33 years.

Her funding has come from many sources, including the National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Mental Health, National Institute for Nursing Research and National Institute on Aging — all components of the National Institutes of Health — as well as the Walther Cancer Foundation, the Michigan Department of Community Health and the American Cancer Society. Her research focuses on patterns of care, utilization of care and the cost of care — physically, emotionally and financially — for the chronically ill and their family caregivers.

She has also presented her research at many conferences, including those of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Oncology Nursing Society, the Gerontological Society of America and the International Society for Nurses in Cancer Care.

Given currently serves on the editorial board of several professional journals, including Research in Nursing and Health, Cancer Nursing, Western Journal of Nursing Research and the European Journal of Oncology Nursing.

Given also served on the Blue Ribbon Panel for the American Cancer Society that set the direction for its behavioral and psychosocial research.

During her career, Given has received numerous honors, including the American Nursing Foundation Distinguished Researcher Award, the Oncology Nursing Society's Distinguished Researcher and Outstanding Service Awards and the College of Nursing Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award at Michigan State University.
