Japan Downsizes Gifts to Centenarians

Japan is overflowing with centenarians—more than 36,000 and increasing. But government officials, in order to save money, have reduced the size of silver mementos given to those reaching 100.  Sept. 15 is Respect for the Aged Day, when the Health Ministry presents silver cups to centenarians. This year's honorees may notice the cup’s diameter has shrunk from 4.13 inches to 3.54 inches.
