ACA Makes Financial Help Available

A major goal of the ACA is to reduce the number of uninsured, either through employer coverage or public and private coverage options. To make coverage on the Marketplace affordable, the ACA makes financial help available, on a sliding scale, to individuals with household incomes between 100 and 400% of the federal poverty level. The ACA required all states to expand their Medicaid coverage to cover all individuals under age 65 with income at or below 138% of the federal poverty level. The Supreme Court decision following a constitutional challenge to the mandated expansion gave states the option to choose whether to expand their Medicaid program. As a result, access to the Medicaid expansion will not be uniformly available across the country.
