AARP Iowa, May 4, 2010
Whether you are an Iowan over age 65 on Medicare, buy insurance on your own or through your employer, or can’t afford health insurance, new benefits as a result of health insurance reforms will affect you.
The law’s new provisions bring a number of benefits to all Iowans, including older residents. The law strengthens Medicare; makes health insurance more accessible and affordable; addresses some discriminatory insurance practices ; and creates new programs to help you get long-term care services in your own home.
By knowing what’s in the law and when the different benefits take effect, you can take advantage of the new provisions for yourself and your family. You can download an AARP brochure on the new benefits. Check www.aarp.org/getthefacts often for the latest information.
In addition, each week, AARP is answering the top questions about health care reform law emailed by readers to HCRquestions@aarp.org.
“Older Iowans have a lot at stake as the new health reform package rolls out, and they’re having a hard time getting complete or consistent information about how it will affect them,” said AARP Iowa State Director Bruce Koeppl. “These resources are part of our efforts to make sure that members have the straightforward, reliable information they need to make the best decisions for themselves and their families.”
