Can VFW Bartenders Spot PTSD?

New program may train them to recognize PTSD and depression symptoms

Can bartenders at Veterans of Foreign Wars halls spot symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression in vets who come in for a drink? Ohio State University researchers say their published survey of VFW bartenders indicates that, with training, barkeeps can do just that — and then point the way to help. Social work professor and lead author Keith Anderson wants to pursue the idea with veterans organizations: "The intervention would provide basic information on issues facing veterans, resources that are available, and simple methods to access services. The training is not intended to turn bartenders into mental health clinicians."
