Given the countless hours that AARP leaders have given to support AARP’s social mission, it’s not surprising that former leaders want to stay connected! Through a recent survey of former volunteer leaders, we learned what areas of AARP’s work are of most interest to them. In order, the top issues of interest to former leaders:
- Social Security
- Age Friendly Communities
- Updates on “hot” federal and state advocacy issues
- Life Reimagined
Survey respondents also let us know that they like the idea of an e-newsletter along with the opportunity for periodic conference calls and access to recent speeches from AARP executives. The good news is that these resources exist, but we need to do a better job of promoting and tailoring them for our former leaders.
Volunteer leaders can use the Volunteer Portal to view and download recent remarks from CEO Jo Ann Jenkins and resources for key initiatives such as the Fraud Watch Network and Livable Communities. Though you will be hearing much more in the coming months, in October we will be overhauling our volunteer technology and offering a New Volunteer Portal! In the meantime, please visit our private AARP Alumni Facebook page to “meet up” with fellow former leaders. If you have any questions or need support, please contact AARP’s Office of Volunteerism and Service’s Volunteer Help Line by email or call 866-740-7719.
