12 Best Things Coming to Netflix in April

Talented Tom Ripley’s back, along with Matt Bomer’s equally debonair con man from ‘White Collar’

Netflix is marching into spring with a promising mix of the old and the new. The streaming giant is hoping to spark a Suits-like revival of the delightful 2010s series White Collar, starring Matt Bomer as a charming con artist tapped to work for the FBI. And speaking of charming grifters, Patricia Highsmith’s irresistible (but deadly) grifter Tom Ripley is getting a new limited series, starring Andrew Scott and shot in luscious black and white.

Magic for Humans star Justin Willman returns for a new prank series; Cate Blanchett narrates a nature docuseries full of imagery that would make David Attenborough salivate; and Rufus Sewell plays Prince Andrew in a series that places the embattled royal on the literal hot seat, opposite a BBC journalist ready to blow up his carefully manicured public image.

Here are our picks for the highlights to add to your viewing queue.

Coming April 1

Sex and the City (Seasons 1-6)

Who says giant corporate streaming services can’t play nice? The iconic HBO series about 30-something besties in turn-of-the-millennium Manhattan strides to Netflix on its stylish Manolo Blahniks (the comedy will still be streaming on Max). It’s a great chance to catch up with Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw and all her tutu-wearing foibles in search of Mr. Right (or, in her case, Mr. Big).

Coming April 1

The Magic Prank Show With Justin Willman (Season 1)

Comic trickster Justin Willman, who starred in Netflix’s Magic for Humans for three seasons, returns with a new series in which he stages elaborate pranks on regular folks – at the suggestion of their friends and loved ones. It looks like a canny blend of Candid Camera, Punk’d, and The Jerry Springer Show.

Coming April 1

White Collar (2009-2014)

Last year, Netflix subscribers (re)discovered the zippy old USA Network series Suits and turned it into a huge streaming hit (with an L.A.-set spin-off show now in the works at NBC). Will lightning strike again for this USA gem, starring Matt Bomer as a gentlemanly con artist who agrees to help the FBI’s White Collar Crime unit to escape prison? The show, which ran for six seasons, boasted the debonair charm of classic caper movies, with Bomer as a twinkly-eyed Cary Grant for a new generation.

Coming April 2

Together: Tr3ble Winners

Soccer fans will flip for this six-part docuseries following Manchester City F.C.’s bid to win a third straight Premier League title – as well as the European Champions League title against Inter Milan and (perhaps most importantly) the FA Cup final against crosstown archrivals Manchester United. (The official title of the show is Together: Tr3ble Winners, but in order to find it on Netflix’s search box, you must type Together: Treble Winners.)

Ripley

Andrew Scott (Moriarty in the Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock series) is the latest to play Tom Ripley, the crafty, luxury-loving grifter first introduced by novelist Patricia Highsmith in the 1950s and later brought to screen in the 1960 French thriller Purple Noon and the 1999 Matt Damon film The Talented Mr. Ripley. Oscar winner Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List) wrote and directed all eight episodes of this limited series, shot in stylish black and white to capture the glamour of 1960s Italy.

Coming April 5

Scoop (2024)

In this eagerly awaited fact-based drama, Britain’s Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell) faces off with BBC journalist Emily Maitlis during a live interview on the prime-time interview show Newsnight – an ill-advised appearance that crystallized the royal’s ties to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and led to his ouster from official duties. This promises to be a juicy inside-media yarn tied up in a Windsor knot.

Coming April 5

The Antisocial Network: Memes to Mayhem (2024)

This absorbing and eye-opening documentary, which earned raves at this year’s SXSW festival, delves into the fascinating history of 4chan – a website that launched in 2003 and quickly drew fans worldwide to exchange memes and vent anonymously. Anonymity was key to the site’s success, and to its notoriety: Users began to take half-baked or deliberately false ideas into the real world, from QAnon to Gamergate to the Jan. 6 riots.

Coming April 10

Unlocked: A Jail Experiment (Season 1)

A few years ago, Arkansas Sheriff Eric Higgins launched an experiment in a detention center in the state’s largest county: giving inmates more autonomy, including freedom to come and go from their cells, as well as the right to decide how some operations should be run. The goal: to create a community-based approach that might set prisoners up for life after jail. This eight-part docuseries follows what happened next – how some chose to maintain order while others continued to challenge authority, even from their peers.

Coming April 10

What Jennifer Did

True-crime documentaries don’t get much twistier than this account of a mysterious and violent 2010 attack on a hard-working family of Chinese-Vietnamese immigrants living just outside Toronto – with traumatized daughter Jennifer Phan as the only witness.

Coming April 16

Jimmy Carr: Natural Born Killer

British stand-up Jimmy Carr, a buttoned-up provocateur with a Woody Woodpecker laugh, sparked an outcry three years ago over a Holocaust joke in his first Netflix special. Now he’s back, with a new routine and a “plan for the next time I get canceled over a joke.”

Coming April 17

Our Living World

Cate Blanchett narrates a new four-part docuseries from the Emmy-winning team behind Our Great National Parks that explores the beautiful and delicate ecosystems in dozens of countries around the world – many under threat by the encroachment of humans.

Coming April 18

The Upshaws (Season 5)

It’s rare for any Netflix original to last for five seasons – so count your blessings that this sitcom about an Indiana mechanic (Mike Epps) and his family is back, and that a sixth season has already been greenlit. While Epps and Kim Fields have great rapport as a married couple who could be straight out of any classic network sitcom, the show gets a sardonic boost from Wanda Sykes as Fields’ wise-cracking sister.
