Take a spin on carousels of yesteryear and today

The carousel's gilded horses and ornate chariots first appeared in the United States in the early 1900s, following a wave of immigration of European carvers. A century later, fewer than 150 genuine merry-go-rounds exist nationwide, with the Binghamton, N.Y., area boasting the most carousels (six).
