A past-his-prime magician finds new purpose in life thanks to a young girl who becomes his biggest fan in The Illusionist, a wonderful new animated film from Sylvain Chomet, whose Triplets of Belleville was nominated for an Oscar in 2002. The story is based on an unproduced script by legendary French filmmaker/comedian Jacques Tati, and Chomet tells Bill Newcott he was at first reluctant even to take a look at it.
