Lauren Hutton, who turns 74 on Nov. 17, has become the oldest woman to ever grace the cover of Vogue. The record had been held by singer Tina Turner, who appeared on the cover of the fashion magazine's German edition in 2013 at the age of 73 and 4 months.
Hitting newsstands Thursday, the Vogue Italia issue — dubbed the “Timeless Issue” — focuses exclusively on women over 60. Besides Hutton, the magazine includes Somali model Iman, 62, social media fashion star Baddie Winkle, 89, and the first black transgender model, Tracey Norman, 66. Hutton, one of modeling’s biggest names in the 1970s, appears on all three covers shot for the October issue.
Although Hutton has dozens of cover shoots under her belt, she called this one the “most important” yet.
“I’ve had a record 27 covers of American Vogue, and I’ve had 13 other Vogue covers, but this is the most important I have ever done, the one that has made me feel most useful,” she said in an official statement. “I’ve been thinking about it for a while, but it took Vogue Italia’s courage to make it true. This is a cover that can change society, because it shows a woman who is vibrant, attractive, who still laughs, and who for the first time is a woman my age.”
In 1973, the legendary Hutton also made history by becoming the industry’s first million-dollar model after signing an exclusive contract with Revlon. This year, Calvin Klein enlisted Hutton to star in its latest underwear campaign. She wore an open blouse and a bra in an ad with the slogan “Calvin Klein, or nothing at all.”
It’s just one more sign that perhaps the fashion world’s longtime youth obsession may be coming to an end as more brands and magazines embrace women of a certain age.
Other older women tapped this year for various ad campaigns include 100-year-old model Bo Gilbert, who starred in a Vogue ad for department store Harvey Nichols. In 2016, Australian fashion label Blue Illusion picked Iris Apfel, at the time 94, to be the style ambassador for its ad campaign.
And on Sunday, Helen Mirren, 72, and Jane Fonda, 79, stole the day as they strutted the catwalk at a L’Oréal fashion show in Paris.
