A lifelong passion for collecting Chicano art
Cheech Marin is best known as the counter-culture comedian who gained recognition as part of the comedy act Cheech & Chong during the '70s and '80s. But what many don’t realize about this funny man is that he’s one of the world’s foremost collectors of Chicano Art, an art form that has previously received little recognition.
Cheech first discovered Chicano Art while perusing contemporary art galleries in the 1960s. He soon became obsessed with the genre and began buying paintings to grace his house. Today, his Malibu home is a shrine to Chicano artists. His mission: reveal their work to the world. “These artists are too good to go unrecognized,” he says.
