Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was one of the leading painters of late 20th-century art. This documentary, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, is a thoughtful portrait of the renowned artist, featuring extensive interviews conducted by Basquiat’s friend, filmmaker Tamra Davis, who talked to him more than 20 years ago.
The film reveals how Basquiat dealt with being a Black artist in a predominantly white field, explores his rise in the art world — which led to a close relationship with Andy Warhol — and looks at how the young painter coped with acclaim, scrutiny and fame.
