Tesla Inc. is recalling 362,758 of its vehicles with a Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta feature because the system may not perform properly around intersections and can exceed speed limits, increasing the risk of an auto accident.

The software contains an Autosteer on City Streets feature which may cause the vehicle to travel straight through an intersection while in a turn-only lane, not come to a complete stop at a stop sign, or drive into an intersection during a yellow traffic light without caution, according to a recall statement published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additionally, it may not respond to changes in speed limits or account for the driver’s change in speed.

“FSD Beta software that allows a vehicle to exceed speed limits or travel through intersections in an unlawful or unpredictable manner increases the risk of a crash,” the agency said.
Tesla received 18 warranty claims between May 8, 2019 and September 12, 2022 that could be related the problems prompting the recall. It has not received any reports of injury or death, said a safety recall report from the NHTSA.
The following models and model years with the software installed or impending installation are recalled and were identified based on their manufacturing, configuration, and software records:
- 2017-2023 Tesla Model 3
- 2016-2023 Tesla Model S
- 2016-2023 Tesla Model X
- 2020-2023 Tesla Model Y
Tesla owners should receive a recall notification letter from the company by April 15. It will also release an over-the-air (wireless) software update in the coming weeks, free of charge.
